Rumors of War DVD Review

Rumors of War follows a young journalist who refuses to get the "chip" that people in the End Times are embedding in their skin.  She begins to see how all prophecies she has been studying are coming true.  She is on the run but leaves behind a journal that is picked up by an agent for the One World Government  years later who ends up realizing the Truth and joins others who are following the Truth.

This movie was a series of flashbacks between Roxy, the young journalist, and Agent Shaw of the One World Government who finds her journal years later.  The events and characters seem real and scary!  It was a little hard to follow the flashbacks, but it was interesting to see how some of the characters changed their beliefs from the beginning to the end of the movie.

*I was given a complimentary copy of this DVD for the purpose of this review.  All opinions are my own.*

Press Release:
In the post apocalyptic future, Agent Shaw (Ben Davies, Courageous) works for the only surviving government working to bring order to a world full of decay and violence.  Shaw offers little mercy to those that would stand in the way of the government’s edict, that everyone submit to an implanted chip that tracks their movements and purchases.    He is certain that those “zealots” that would put their belief in God ahead of the beliefs of society, could lead the world back on the road toward destruction.   The zealots need to be eliminated.   But his faith was challenged when he found a small book in the rubble near one of the “rebel” encampments- the diary of young college student named Roxy (Jennifer Cooper), who was at the epicentre  of the chip’s creation years before.  She was a young aspiring journalism major whose life took a dark turn when she began researching Mr. Zurn (Eric Roberts, The Dark Knight), the man behind this implanted chip.

Rumors of Wars is a a suspenseful, action packed film that centers around two converging stories- the “last days” of our present and the final days of our future.  Written and Directed by Paul Tomborello, and starring Ben Davies, Jennifer Cooper, and Eric Roberts, the DVD comes to stores November 11th.  For more information or to see the trailer go to rumorsofwarsmovie.com.

When Calls the Heart- Rules of Engagement DVD Review

When Calls the Heart: Rules of Engagement DVD is a show stopper with some unexpected twists and turns.  As Jack returns to Coal Valley, he is greeted not only by Elizabeth, but by his former fiancée who arrives via stagecoach and drapes herself on Jack who is taken by surprise.  Elizabeth is dumbfounded and feels awkward and foolish around Jack and Rosemary.    As Jack tries to balance the two women that are in his life, he also continues to investigate the mine explosion.  Bill Avery, a former Mountie,  is hired to come in and make a thorough search of the area to make a case against the owner.  He enlists Abigail's help and they begin a close friendship as well.  Elizabeth is given an opportunity to pursue a more lucrative position, but feels torn for her feelings for Jack and the job that she has come to love.  Things heat up between for Jack as he decides between Rosemary and Elizabeth and the owner of the mine takes bold steps to prevent any further investigation into the explosion.  Who will Jack choose and will the town be able to be settled and move forward with hope from this mine disaster?

I was very intrigued with the new characters that came into this movie.  I felt that Elizabeth handled herself very well despite the charming Miss Rosemary who seemed to have a sharp tongue and prideful demeanor.  Jack seemed to know what his heart was telling him, but couldn't find a way to please both women.  It was also fun to see Abigail enjoy company with a man who also became a hero to her.  This movie had some great moments and a special surprise at the end!

Homemaking 201 DVD Review (and SALE!)

Homemaking 201 is the next in the series of DVD's for homemakers from Family Vision Films.  Jennifer Ross and her family have a very welcoming home and a refreshing perspective of motherhood as being a servant of God.  Bible verses, quotes, poems and articles of encouragement are shared throughout the hour of this film.  I love the many ways that Jennifer not only ministers to her family, but also teaches and trains in the process.  She shares many ideas for saving money by making baby wipes, homemade dryer sheets, organizing recipes and creating a homemaking binder.   She sets up many simple resources that allow her day to go smoothly like a hospitality basket, chore chart, homeschool baskets and maintaining home tools like vacuums.  She shares some easy recipes and shows how to properly wear an apron (the "uniform" for a homemaker).  My favorite part was seeing how a focused and unfocused day is like.  I identified in both areas and I know that a mother who is focused pleases the Lord in her daily life.  This DVD gives instruction and vision for a homemaker who seeks to glorify the Lord.   You will be blessed and encouraged to be a more focused and humble homemaker as well as gain some valuable skills and tips for your motherhood journey.

When Calls the Heart- Change of Heart DVD Review

Finally, Jack and Elizabeth have a date.  Elizabeth is walking on Cloud Nine because the handsome Mountie has taken her on an exclusive date at Abigail's Café.  To add to Elizabeth's happiness, her sister Julie comes to town for a visit escorted by another Mountie who happens to be a replacement for Jack!  Jack has forgotten that he sent in a notice when he first came to Coal Valley to be released from his post, but in the meantime, he had fallen in love with the sweet school teacher.  Jack is torn and is nervous about telling Elizabeth.  Julie is excited to visit the small country town and as she explores, she meets a strange young man in a cabin in the woods.  She immediately becomes attached to this man and later finds out he is part of a gang of robbers that are on WANTED posters.  Both sisters are completely lost in their desires for the men who come into their lives.  Elizabeth is willing to let Jack go and chase his new assignment, but is aching to be with him again.  When a confrontation between the Mounties and the gang occur, Elizabeth's life is at stake.  Jack becomes her hero, but will he still stay or will he go?

I was so excited to receive the next video of this exciting and romantic series from When Calls the Heart.  Jack has been watching, protecting and pursuing Elizabeth, but has finally made a proper move.  I love how these two interact.  Elizabeth keeps her distance, but I can tell she wants to fall for this guy.  This story had some great action and a mystery that still remains to be solved involving Abigail and the owner of the mine.  I am very interested to see how Jack and Elizabeth's relationship progresses and what will become of the information Abigail has found regarding the mine disaster.

The Daughter of Highland Hall by Carrie Turansky Book Review

The Daughter of Highland Hall: A Novel (Edwardian Brides Book 2) by Carrie Turansky is the next book after The Governess of Highland Hall.  Katherine (Kate) Ramsey is ready to make her debut in London, England.  She's 18 years old and looking forward to finding a husband.  But as she engages in the society parties she feels empty and useless.  Her overbearing aunt Louisa is intent on finding the perfect match and will go to great lengths to ensure Kate's rightful place in society even if Kate is unhappy.  Jon Foster is a medical student who stays with Kate's family for the summer since his sister is marrying Kate's cousin.  Despite Kate's busy society schedule, she forms an unlikely friendship with Jon.  They both discover that they love to help others and they pursue activities with that goal.  Unbeknownst to the family, Kate and Jon have fallen in love and Kate's aunt is greatly displeased.  And to make matters worse, her cousin's brother is accused of murder and Kate's name is splashed all over the newspaper articles.  Will Kate be able to live a life of love she dreams about or be chained to a man she does not love because he comes from a proper place in society?

I have to admit that Kate Ramsey was my least favorite character in The Governess of Highland Hall.  She seemed very selfish and sour.  But in this book she shines!  Carrie does an excellent job in showing the inner workings of a London debut and the expectations of society for these young girls.  Kate is a stubborn and opinionated girl and fights for what she wants.  She is also torn because she wants to please the authorities in her life.  She is caught in the middle of what she desires and what is best for her, according to her aunt.  Even thought she did try to please her aunt, she knew she needed to follow her heart.   This story was exciting and filled with twists and turns.  I was entranced and couldn't put this book down.  Be sure to pick up your copy of the second book in Carrie Turansky's series The Edwardian Brides.

Be sure to check out my review of the first book in this series, The Governess of Highland Hall.

A Long Way Off DVD Review

My review:

Jake Abraham is unhappy working at his father's farm and wishes for a more fulfilling life.  He asks for his inheritance and rushes off to the big city.  He invests in some "worthwhile" ventures, but soon finds out that they cost a lot more than he bargained for.  Along the way he meets two women: Summer, a sweet coffee shop girl who is concerned for his soul and Laura, a seductive actress who is interested in his money.  When Jake finds out that he has lost everything he runs away and lives with the homeless community.  When he decides to finally come back home, his father welcomes him with open arms.

This movie is a wonderful retelling of the story of the prodigal son for modern times (Luke 15:11-32).  I really liked the character, Summer.  At first I thought she might be someone who was going to steer Jake in the wrong direction, but she was sweet and smart and treated Jake with kindness and friendship.  She was also willing to do anything to help Jake recover from his drastic mistake.  This was a great modern day story of the lost son and the ending is predictable, but truly restorative.

But Jake is all too eager to sow his oats and make his fortune in a series of sharp stock market moves. He soon runs afoul of an opportunistic temptress (JOANNA JOWETT/Destiny Road) and her mysterious boyfriend, Frank (ROBERT DAVI/ License to Kill/Goonies/Diehard), and in the process, loses everything and finds his life on the line.

Far from the wise words of his father, Abraham, Jake is finally free to live the high life that he’s always wanted, trading the traditional values of his upbringing to revel in every temptation that money can buy. Just when Jake thinks the world is his playground and every day offers another enticing opportunity, he must come face to face with the consequences of the life he’s chosen. Jake must learn that sometimes it takes losing everything to realize/appreciate what he left behind, and if his mistakes can ever outweigh the grace of a father’s forgiveness.

Hero DVD Review + Giveaway!!

A father returns after 7 years away from his family.  His wife passes away and his son wants nothing to do with him.  Joe Finn teams up with his reluctant son David to coach a little league baseball team.  He decides to enlist the help of the fathers of the players but finds the dads to be too busy or absent from their son's lives.  He knows he can't change the past and he desperately wants his son to love him despite all of his past mistakes.  David longs for his father to connect with him and can't understand why he cares more about the boys on the team than his own son.  Both Joe and David learn that making a relationship work is tough.  The boys on the team need this father/son partnership to be strong as they struggle with their own hurts. And in the end both Joe and David are restored.  Hero is a movie for every son and father to watch.

I love how Joe Finn doesn't give up despite all the opposition he comes against with his own son and the community of dads that need encouragement to step into their son's lives.  The story that really gripped my heart was the young father in prison who helped his son play baseball behind the fence.  It was touching to see him involved and even though he could not physically touch his son, he was intentional to coach his son.  Watch Hero and be ready to cheer on fathers and sons for the effort they give to make time for each other.

This movie releases on Tuesday, September 16 in stores.

HERO

Dads are a Superpower
Coming to DVD September 16th

Los Angeles, California- From producers of Alone Yet Not Alone, comes a heartfelt movie about legendary small town baseball coach, Joe Finn (Burgess Jenkins, Remember the Titans, Nashville, The Shunning), who after taking his shot as a scout for the big leagues returns home to discover the damage he's done by leaving his family behind.   Now on a quest to rebuild his relationship with his son David, Joe forms a new baseball league to reinvigorate the underdog little league team his son had been coaching.  Together, as father and son, they try to put away their differences and help bring their ragtag team of ball players, “The Gappers”, to victory.

Burgess, who has a child of his own, was excited about the film.   “This movie really reinforces the importance of fathers in a child’s life.  Sports can be that vehicle to solidify the bond.”  George Escobar, a producer of Hero, wanted to make a movie that highlighted the real value in playing a sport and trying to win.   “I grew up playing sports, and this idea of playing without winners and losers just seems like a missed opportunity to teach the kids how to train themselves to win.  As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.  A rival will push you harder than the desire to do your best.”

In a movie sure to inspire fathers and sons alike, Hero presents an all-star cast including Gregory Alan Williams (In the Line of Fire, The Preacher's Kid), R. Keith Harris (Big Fish), and Mark Joy (The Ultimate Gift).    The film also includes a musical score by Grammy winner, Michael Omartian.  For more information or to see the trailer go to www.herofamilymovie.com

Synopsis:  A father’s broken relationship with his family fills him with determination to win back the son he left behind.  Reaching out through the game they both love, he deliberately forms a baseball team designed to reconnect both fathers and sons, transforming their town in the process.  The story shows how one good man can lead change in his community for the common good.

Growing Up Social by Dr. Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane Book Review

Growing Up Social: Raising Relational Kids in a Screen-Driven World by Dr. Gary Chapman and Arlene Pellicane is a book about how to raise kids to be responsible in a digital world.  With so many media outlets, it's easy for kids to check out of real life and create an online life that affects health, relationships and emotional well being.  The authors address many valid questions and give parents guidelines on how to teach children to be balanced in their digital activity.  They gave several tips of how to engage kids in the real life activities as well as safety for online time.  They focused on teaching several skills (affection, anger management, appreciation, apology and attention) that are desperately needed in youth today as well as impact their future relationships.  They also shared many personal stories and situations where critical decisions need to be made concerning the use of technology in the home.  Both Arlene and Gary gave unique perspectives to this subject and offer parents hope and specific actions to make the digital overload a manageable part of everyday life as kids these days are being raised with social media.

I highly recommend that every parent read this book.  It is a book that is current with our culture.  I really appreciated all the positive ways these authors addressed social media.  This was a book to help families not only teach our children the social skills they need, but also to manage the social media that is so prevalent in our society.  They made some wonderful suggestions and practical points in how to make the digital world be a part of a child's rather life rather than most of it.  I know that I am being very careful of what social media my kids are using, but I think I need to be more diligent in how I manage my social media use.  It's a different world that we need to navigate.  This book will be a great tool to guide families to make good choices in this media saturated society.

When Calls the Heart: Second Chances DVD Review

When Calls the Heart - Second Chances DVD is another heart warming story of love, loss, and second chances.  The community of Coal Valley continues to recover from the mine accident that stole so many fathers and sons.  Abigail tries to piece her life back together and seeks to open a café to sell her baked goods, but she is asked to give up more than she bargained for.  Mountie Jack is trying to keep in Elizabeth's good graces, but seems to keep coming up short at every turn.  Elizabeth tires to help a student who can't read with some unconventional methods, but the father is against it.  Adam Miller returns back to town with a peg leg and he can't seem to fit back into his family who desperately loves him.  And Elizabeth is expected to lead the Founder's Day Play in one week and she scrambles around to find help from every corner of the town.  Life continues to move along in Coal Valley as each member finds their place in society and begins to make changes to create a new normal.

I absolutely love this series of movies that also show on the Hallmark Channel.  I have fallen in love with Jack and Elizabeth and I love all the interactions between them.  I also enjoy how each of them reach out to the community and make themselves available for help and encouragement.  This movie was about second chances and it seems that each character was able to make a second chance happen for them.  Be sure to watch for the surprise picture on the painting for the Founder's Day Play.

Red Hot Faith (Lessons from a Lukewarm Church) Bible Study by Cindy Bultema Review and Giveaway!!

What if you thought that lukewarm is OK?  No, it isn't.  In fact, it's worse than being just cold.  The church of Laodicea was caught in a trap.  They were prosperous, successful and had everything they could possibly want, but their hearts were lukewarm and God was going to spit them out of his mouth.  They were so far away from God's best.  But it is possible to come close to God and experience the abundant and red hot faith life that He has planned for each believer.

Red Hot Faith is a new Bible study from Cindy Bultema designed to encourage you to step out of your current "lukewarm" life and take a journey to develop your Red Hot Faith!  There is a DVD of 8 sessions with Cindy expounding on the city of Laodicea, the passage in Revelation about that church and the lessons we can learn in how to increase our faith.  She often refers to God's transforming work in our hearts.  She has seen first hand how God can move a person from a life ruled by selfishness to a life of serving God wholeheartedly.  The participant's guide helps as you watch the DVD and includes a weekly Bible study and memory verse.  Each lesson has an introduction, a place to take notes on the video, discussion questions and going deeper for further study.  The leader's guide has great suggestions for how to facilitate a discussion group for Bible study.    All 3 components fill out a wonderful Bible study for women who desire for a changed life.

Red Hot Faith is not going to change you unless you want to be changed.  Cindy gives some very sobering facts, but also shares how God can use our weaknesses to make us strong.  She is real, honest and able to relate to her audience.  When I heard Cindy's story, He Loves Me (which you must see), I was completely in awe how God can truly transform a person and how He can use that person in a powerful way.  I love how Cindy uses a lot of visuals in this study.  Cindy has a gift for teaching God's Word with and she has chosen to spice it up with her new study, Red Hot Faith.

Cindy says, "I desperately want a life that has purpose, passion, spark and meaning, but most days I feel caught up in the whirlpool of life."

"It's time to say NO to the swirling, lukewarm routine of life that keeps you from experiencing God's best."

"Be hot, be cold, BE SOMETHING!!"

Be sure to visit Cindy's website for more encouragement and joy!

My Review:
He was a pilot, loved math, beat drums for his passion,  respected by his friends and yet did not live up to his parent's expectations.  She was a flight nurse, received lots of attention from men, wanted to attend chief nursing school and left home to flee from parents who disdained her.  Both Roger Cooper and Kay Jobson were as far away from a relationship with each other until God met them both in their deepest hour of need.  Lt. Roger Cooper was a man who desired to play in a band when his circuit was up.  He didn't bet on falling for flirtatious and vulnerable Lt. Kay Jobson.  Kay believed that she could have any man at her fingertips, but Roger was different.  As God brought them together to share faith and friendship they found they had a lot in common.  It wasn't until Kay shared her dream of having a house with a fence and a yard that Roger decided he couldn't be the man for Kay since his dream involved traveling with a band.  Then Kay, Roger and several other pilots and nurses make an emergency landing in enemy territory.  They are on the run for 2 months and become close to each other as they struggle to hide and survive.  Enter the world of WWII and the lives of men and women caring for the wounded as they make hopes and dreams come alive in a land of death and dying.  Discover how Roger and Kay learn the powerful redemptive love of God and the magnetic pull of love despite all odds.

In Perfect Time by Sarah Sundin is the third book in the series of Wings of the Nightingale.  Three flight nurse stories are told in these historical and romantic novels.  I really enjoyed the first two books, but I wasn't a fan of Kay Jobson and was not quite sure how I would like this novel.  I did feel that the beginning was a little slow, but when Kay and Roger started interacting more and they were put in a tense situation I saw the story blossom with unique twists and turns.  I loved the tension in the relationship and the special signals each developed for each other.  Sarah knows how to weave history, romance and action into an exciting and page turning novel.

The Cure for the "Perfect" Life by Kathi Lipp and Cheri Gregory is a look at the 4 "P" Bullies and 12 ways to stop trying harder and start living braver.  The four "P" Bullies are: Perfectionism, People-Pleasing, Procrastination and Performancism.  With humorous, yet true stories and unique candor, these ladies examine the Try Harder Living pit that many women succumb to and give hope and encouragement on how to dig out of that pit.  They invite you to Braver Living Rebellion.  There are four rebel personality types- Expressive, Analytic, Driver and Amiable.  Each personality type reacts differently with the 4 "P" Bullies.  This book is interactive and self-examining.  Each chapter begins with a bully belief (ie. If I want something done right, I'm going to have to do it myself.) and a brave combat (There's more than one way to do it right.).  There is a short quiz (they are all different), a story from a rebel, tiny acts of rebellion (ways to not try harder) and tips for each rebel personality type.  The message they wish to convey with their readers is to leave behind the  bully beliefs and embrace the freedom of choosing God's way and live in a brave new way.

I want to live the "perfect" life and the harder I try, the more frustrated I become.  I wasn't made to live this way.  I was made to embrace an imperfect life, but fully rely on God.  As I read this book, I identified with many of the bully beliefs.  Do I really live this way?  I appreciate how brave the authors and contributors were to share real stories of real struggles, but also give a hope and vision for a better way of life.  Do you struggle with any of the "P" Bullies?  Then stop trying harder and start living braver!  Get your copy today!

The Perfect Summer DVD Review

The Perfect Summer is story about overcoming hardship, acquiring confidence in self and improving relationships.  After Jake's father passes away, he and his mom move from a big city to live in small beach town with his grandfather.  Jake is none too pleased to have no internet access and even less pleased to be a new kid in town that is shoved around by some high school show offs.  The big sport in town is surfing and when Jake meets a pretty girl, he starts to want to break out of his shell.  Little does he know that his grandfather was a former surf champ.  As Jake learns to surf his grandfather shares many life lessons of hope and perseverance.  Along the way Jake learns some tough lessons in love, life and the pursuit of something greater than himself.

This movie was very touching and I really felt drawn into the story line as each character carried a burden that was lifted by peeling back some of the hard layers around their hearts.  It was not easy to see Jake pushed around by some punk kids, but I loved the way the grandfather stepped in and really encouraged Jake to drive himself through the rough waters.  The grandfather had many words of wisdom throughout the movie.  This story was about second chances and making the most of the opportunities available.  Jake, his mom and grandfather were all hurting, but in the end, they found healing. I loved the music, the heart of the story, the action and the message.   What a great movie!!

Don't miss Eric Roberts who brilliantly plays the grandfather and a few appearances by Jason Castro who was on American Idol.

When Calls the Heart: The Dance DVD Review

When Calls the Heart: The Dance is another episode of the town of Coal Valley and the lovely teacher, Elizabeth Thatcher, who has embraced the life in the wild country .   As new miners come in to take the place of those that had died earlier in the year, trouble begins to brew again.  Most of the new miners keep to themselves, but Billy Hamilton takes a shine to Miss Thatcher and begins to woo her with poems and sweet talk.  When several robberies are reported, Jack Thornton, the town's constable/mountie  starts to investigate and hopes that he can capture the criminal and that his suspicions lead to Billy.  Elizabeth is distraught and reprimands Jack for being jealous.  She is torn between two men, one who fights to protect her and one who fights to win her heart at any cost.  When the truth comes out, both Elizabeth and Jack must face the what really matters and what is best for the town and their relationship.

This was by far my favorite movie of the When Calls the Heart series.  I really like the dynamics between Elizabeth and Jack and how they each hold back, but underneath truly care for each other.  When someone else takes interest in Elizabeth, she feels swept off her feet and even when Jack tries to protect her, she stands up to him and makes him really think about his motivations.  There is also another sweet story of a young widow who starts getting attention from a new miner, but her son is not about to let another man take the place of his deceased father.  This story had many great moments and was fun to watch.  This family friendly movie is sure to win your heart!
